Putting out the Spirit’s fire…who? You? Let’s see…

If you’ve ever sat in front of a campfire, you’ve felt the heat! It’s flames can burn very bright and hot. But what happens if someone keeps throwing water on the wood?

Initially, it will only dampen the heat of the flames. But if the person continues to throw water on the flames, eventually that water WILL quench, smother, or put out the fire altogether.

Has the Holy Spirit been speaking to your heart? You know what I mean…tenderly directing you to do something?

Have you obeyed Him and done what He has nugged you to do? Or have you, like I have in times past, kinda ignored Him?
Let me help you with that today. I want to encourage you to:

  • Zoom in on the Holy Spirits leading.
  • Open your heart when He is speaking to you.
  • Be used by Him in big or small ways.
  • Take God up on moments when He wants to pour His power through you.
  • Jump when He says JUMP!
  • Not throw water on the flames until you quench the Spirit!

1 Thessalonians 5:19 says:

Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit. (AMP)

See the word, “quench”, in this verse? It means to extinguish, smother, suppress, douse, put out, snuff out. It often means to extinguish a fire by dousing it with water. In some places in the Bible, it means to evaporate or to dry up. Yikes! I don’t want that happening to you!

Instead of blocking out the little impressions your heart and head feel when the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you something and dousing the flames, it’s time to say, “Yes, Lord, I’ll do what you tell me to do. I’ll have that tough conversation you want me to have, I’ll go to the neighbor who needs to be invited to church, I’ll do whatever you ask me to do.”

Know what’s going to happen if you do life like this?

You’ll start putting fuel back on the fire again!

Every time you say, “Yes, Lord,” you’ll be juiced! You’ll be stoking the coals and you’ll cause the Holy Spirits fire to burn even brigher in your life.

I know it’s scary to jump on what the Holy Spirit sometimes promts us to do.

Sometimes we are afraid of what may happen if we do. But I want to encourage you to just do it. Just take a chance. Take God up on how He wants to use you.

He will never fail you or let you down. And God’s big enough to fix your mistakes, there’s really no corner he can’t back you out of.

So, what have you got to lose? Nothing, right?

Get out there and let God use you today to set someone free…. all because you are determined to do what the Holy Spirit asks you to do.

Pray this with me:

God, help me to quickly move when the Spirit of God prompts me or speaks to my heart about doing something. I don’t want to throw water on the flames of the Spirit in my heart. From today on, I’m making a choice to quickly obey, but I need your strength to do this. Thank you for filling me up with brand new courage to step out. I’m going to leave the results up to you. I know we’ll do great things together. In Jesus Name, Amen.

If you’ve ever thought God has stopped looking out for you, or that He’s a tad too busy to take care of the small concerns you have, think again. I was so excited for my assistant, Tanya, when I read this on her Facebook page. I asked if I could share her story because I know there’s a chance that you’re facing the same thoughts and feelings she has.  Listen to Tanya’s story in her own words…

I love it when God shows His BIG love for me in the littlest of things!

Doing what is right or best isn’t always easy and can be hard. Sorting through all of the “stuff” that comes along with change produces it’s own emotional roller-coaster. That was my weekend.

Fast forward to this morning and I can’t find my necklace. Mind you – it doesn’t seem like a big deal and in the grand scheme of things it isn’t. But I rarely misplace things and it eats at me if I can’t find what I am looking for.necklace

So this morning I couldn’t find it – looked through bags, on the ground, the car, etc. Decided that it was just gone. Got to work, asked a friend to check around her house to see if it fell out of my bag when I was there yesterday. Nothing.

Got home tonight – searched again in all the same places hoping I’d overlooked it this morning. Still nothing. Sent a text back to my friend and asked her to look in another area of her house. Nada. I’d looked everywhere (even the trash) and it was just gone.

As I was laying in bed – praying about all that has been going on – right decisions made, believing that God’s got everyone’s back (including mine), in the middle of my prayers my necklace “pops” into my mind and the fact that I didn’t check in my purse.

No reason to check there because I just know I stuck it in my bag with my clothes yesterday afternoon.

I continue to pray and my room gets brighter.

I think maybe it’s a car outside, but no, it’s my phone – so I get up out of bed and mess with the phone and think to check my purse while I am up – and I find my necklace in one of the side pockets!

Here’s the point of this really long status – God knew it bothered me to have lost something that I valued – or to THINK I had lost it. And because it mattered to me and I matter to God; it mattered to Him too.

I didn’t just happen to think about that necklace in the middle of my prayers, prayers where I was praying for God’s provision and guidance. He knew my Doubting Thomas had reared its ugly head (again) and I needed reassurance.

Finding that necklace simply reminded me that God loves me so much and SO individually (sad how easy it can be to forget this)!

The God-of-All used my quiet time with Him to help me find that which I THOUGHT I’d lost. Isn’t it amazing that He loves us to this degree? Mind blowing when you think about it. Truly humbled and grateful!! The necklace is just a bonus!

Luke 12:7 NLT

And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. (Or a necklace!) Parenthesis added!
