4 Ways You Can Slap Your Enemies Around with Prayer

We all have enemies, right? The Bible warns, “Beware when all men speak well of you!” No matter how loving and friendly you are – you’ll always have an enemy, just because you live and breath.

I hate to burst your bubble, but Satan, well, he just hates you – just cause you’re you! And more so, if you have dedicated your life to Christ. That’s just the way it is. Let me show you 4 ways you can slap your enemies around.

1. Recognize your enemy isn’t really the person you think he is.

It’s not Bob or Jessica that did you wrong. It’s not Gabe or Melinda who is spreading rumors and making crude remarks about you. Oh, yes, it’s them in the flesh, but you have to look to the being behind their flesh. The devil.

He’s the one who puts ideas in people’s minds to do you wrong. He’s the one who causes selfish desires to rise up in their flesh. So when someone tries to take you down remember it’s not them, it’s the devil who’s behind them.

Recognize the source.

This person is just a jerk who needs God’s help to be a better person. So what can you do? Once you recognize the dark spirit behind the person, forgive them.

They know not what they do. I know that’s hard to swallow. They should be smarter than that. They should know what they have done to you. Or maybe they do and they just don’t care. Or maybe they know exactly what they have done to you and they meant it.

Either way, recognize the dark spirit behind their behavior. They need God. You can pray they get a big dose of him. Which leads me to the second thing you can do for your critics. Pray for them.

2. Pray for your enemy

Why? Because you were told to. Not by me. I’m just reminding you what Jesus said to do in the Bible. Here’s what a couple of scriptures have to say about it:

Matthew 5:44, But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. …If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that?

Romans 12:14 says: Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.

Man, I wish those verses weren’t in the Bible. But they are – and for good reason. Pray for those who mistreat you and it will end up sweetening your deal. How, because you will be helping them turn over a new leaf. Why the heck should you care? Cause deep down inside you really do want to make a difference in people’s lives, don’t ya? Here’s your chance!

Oh yeah, and here’s why it’s a deal sweetener for you — what goes around comes around. You will be reaping what you sow. So on that topic – if you’ve ever been a jerk to someone else, they just might end up praying for you too! Win-win!

3. Forgive your enemy.

Why forgive when they don’t deserve it? Because you don’t deserve it either. Huh? Yeah, you might want to read that again. You don’t deserve to be forgiven either. But you are. Jesus forgave you and your crud even before you said yes to him (Romans 3:10).

So do the same for your enemy. It will end up setting you free so you might as well.

If you think you’re sticking it to them by not forgiving, you’re only sticking yourself. Unforgiveness is one of the top reasons people fall into depression, stress related disease, and whole bunch of other ailments.

So don’t waste your time holding a grudge. It only hurts you.

Ephesians 4:32, …be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

If you’re having a tough time forgiving, then pray and ask God to help you forgive. He will!

4. Love them. I know this is the craziest idea of all right?! And the toughest. What you really want to do is stick it back to them. But, be the bigger person. Be the lover and you will win. Love conquers all.

John 13:34, 35 says: So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

If it’s hard to love them up close then love them from a distance. You will be amazed how love can melt their heart of stone and turn them around. If you can love them you may soon enough find them in your corner. Cause that’s just how love works!

5. Instead of Slapping Them, Let God Slap a Blessing on You!

I Peter 3:9, Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

Did someone say blessing? Blessed when I’m messed with? Yep. It’s coming if you handle it right.

I Peter 3:12 The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers.

Nice motivation, huh?

I Peter 3:16 Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!

I know you’re not keen on suffering, but when you keep the end in mind. Let God slap a blessing on you.

Do You Feel Dirty Because of Your Background?

Susan came into my office and sat down. By the way she slumped into the chair I could tell things were eating away at her.

As she was unloading a dirty list of secrets, her head kept dropping a few notches with each account.

Stopping her, I said, That’s it. You’re done. You have a dirty record. You smell of sleeping with another man you’re not married to, you’ve been lying to your best friend about your extra curricular activities. But that’s it.

She looked at me confused.

That’s it?

How can you say that? Can’t you see how bad I feel about myself?

Yes, I shot back. I can. But you are forgiven, aren’t you? You have a Savior who paid for your sleeping around, right?

I guess so, she said.

And you have a Savior who cleaned the slate when you continued lying to your best friend, right?

She said…Sort of.

Sort of?!

Wait a minute, I said.

You believe Jesus died for you?

Yes, I do.

Then that’s all we’re going to focus on from here on. Got it?

How dirty is your background?

Spotty question, huh? Gonna give me a spotty answer?

Hey, it’s just you and me here, so let’s be real with each other. I’ve got skeletons in my past, you do too.  And I bet it makes you feel…

  • embarrassed
  • not-good-enough
  • ashamed
  • like a “low-life”
  • unacceptable
  • unworthy
  • unapproved
  • dirty

I’m feeling ya.

But I want you to know today that no matter how dirty your background is, you’re beautiful. Oh, you may not feel like you’re beautiful, but if you can put your emotions aside, and put this fact in front, you’ll begin to feel it.

I’ve got a little recipe for you. I know this could sound a little silly, but if you give it a go, you’ll find it changes how you feel about yourself. YES, you will start to REALLY feel beautiful (or guys – you can feel handsome).

Why? Repetition of these scriptures will transform your thinking. And your “right” thinking will morph your feelings. You’ll feel beautifully clean.

Check these “Clean – Feeling Adjusters” out:

  • Titus 3:5 (NLT)

he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.

  • Galatians 2:20 (NLT)

My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
