9 Benefits You Have If You’re In Christ

Imagine you’re hired a prestigious company who is known for great benefits and taking care of their employees extremely well (Think Google, Netfix, Etc).

Your first day on the job you’re handed a packet which details your benefits. Since you don’t really like to read, you just kinda skim the packet of paperwork and toss it in the backseat of your car. You know you can read the rest later when you have time.

Several months later you find out your having a baby.

A baby? YAY! Congratulations to you and your spouse!

And as exciting as that is, now you’re wondering how your life is going to change. Ekks!

How you’re going to handle the stress of finding a competent baby-sitter you can trust so you can dash off to work every morning?

You look at the classified ads for a good baby-sitter. You check with family and friends. You ask around.

You got nothing. You’re still without someone you can trust to care for your new bundle of love.

Time is running out. The delivery date is coming soon and your stressing… Still no sitter.

Thankfully, someone in the break room overhears your dilemma.

They ask,  “Didn’t you read your benefits package?”

“You don’t need to loose sleep over finding the right baby sitter. Your benefits package covers free child care as an employee of this company!”

What?  You had access to this all along?

Yes! But you didn’t know it because you never took the time to read what was given to you in your benefits package.

Kinda makes me think of this scripture in Hosea 4 that goes like this:

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…

Getting Acquainted With Your Benefits Package

Hey, I don’t want you lacking in any area of your life. So, I want you to get acquainted with the benefits package you have in Christ.

You may have only heard about this second hand. Maybe you’ve not read the fine print in your Bible for yourself. If so, no sweat. Let’s take a look and make sure you totally understand the benefits you’re entitled to IF you are in Christ.

Just what can you count on if you’re a believer?

Below is a quick list of 9 benefits from Psalm 103:1-5. Let’s take a look at what you have, so you can receive them as you believe they belong to you.

Psalm 103

Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul; and all that is [deepest] within me, bless His holy name!

Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits

Who forgives [every one of] all your iniquities, Who heals [each one of] all your diseases,

Who redeems your life from the pit and corruption, Who beautifies, dignifies, and crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercy;

Who satisfies your mouth [your necessity and desire at your personal age and situation] with good so that your youth, renewed, is like the eagle’s [strong, overcoming, soaring]!(A)

I love this, don’t you?!

Here’s a breakdown of these 9 benefits:

  1. He forgives you. Not just once either! Verse 3 says God forgives ALL your iniquities.
  2. He Heals you. Not just one healing either! Verse 3 says God heals ALL your diseases.
  3. He redeems you. Meaning you’re salvation is fixed in him!
  4. He beautifies you. Makes you look good in His eyes!
  5. He dignifies you. You’re guilt can fade in the light of Christ so you can feel worthy.
  6. He crowns you kindness. That’s the loving-kind!
  7. And mercy too – in the most tender way.
  8. He satisfies your desires. (Everything you need and desire, no matter what stage you’re in, no matter your situation, He’s got you covered.)
  9. You’re renewed like you were when you were young so you can be strong, overcome every obstacle, and soar over every circumstance.

That’s a complete benefit package! So, know what you’re entitled to! Keep this passage of scripture in a spot where you will see it and stay acquainted with all Jesus has given you. The only reason you won’t have these benefits is if you forget their yours!

Here’s a quick prayer starter for you so you can keep these benefits on your radar:

God, thank you for all that you’ve done to forgive me of all of my sins. All is a big word. It makes me so grateful. Thank you for saving me from destruction. I may need reminding from time to time of the fact that your crowning me with loving kindness and tender mercies. That’s a lot to take in. Show me how you’re satisfying my mouth with good things and how you are renewing my youth like the eagle’s. Help me remember all of these benefits every day. Show me more of what Christ has done for me. I am thankful. I will bless the Lord, and FORGET NOT ALL HIS BENEFITS.

Striving for perfection so you can get into God’s graces, are ya? Ok. Stupid idea. But I’ve been there. Let me show you why you’re headed for failure and what you can do instead. Let’s just say, you can take the easy way out – without even being penalized – like my son did when he washed my car last week.

I told my son that if he washed my car I’d pay him $20. He had to do outside and inside. Vacume, dust. Spit shine the tires. You know…the works. Well, he didn’t deliver. So, in my mind, I’m thinking, “Fine, he won’t get paid.” That will teach him!

But then my dad arrives on the scene. He starts washing the vehicle. I look out the window and see my 73 year old father out performing my son. Not gonna lie, I’m getting a little upset with my son for this. He could have done it by himself. Put in the labor. Got the money.

That’s fair, right?

But then I started thinking. That makes sense in the parenting world and yes, even in the business world.

You work, you get paid.

But that’s not how it works in the world of God’s grace.

So, for the purpose of teaching my son about God’s grace, I paid him. Yep…paid him for work he didn’t do. And gave him a $10 tip on top.

Why? To show him what God’s grace is like. God’s grace is Jesus, coming along side of us like my dad did for my son. Jesus shows up, does the work and gives us the paycheck (salvation and blessings).

We do nothing to deserve it. We don’t even have to lift a finger. We do less than my son did to wash the car. We do nada.

When you think about all you do trying to acheive perfection in exchange for salvation and blessings, it might look like this…

  • You fast
  • You tithe
  • You help those in need
  • You’re better than most people in your circle

So what does that get ya? Let’s see what Jesus would say… “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled.” (Luke 18:14.)

That’s not exactly what you were going for, huh?

But what about the scripture that says… “Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect” (Matt 5:8)? That’s pretty clear, isn’t it? Makes you want to at least try to be perfect. But consider this…

For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly NOT enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20)

If you know you’ve never acheived the status of a Pharisee… If you know you’ve NEVER been perfect, and you know you’ll never BE perfect, you need Jesus’ words of grace. You need to hear Him speak about an alternate route to his grace. Trading his perfectness for yours.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled”. (Matthew 5:6)

What is righteousness? Christ. So, hunger for Christ and all he is (He’s perfection to the max!) and you’ll be righteous. And when you do, bonus… you’ll desire to behave better. Check this little gem of a scripture out:

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness. (Titus 2:11)

Lookie there! Grace teaches us to live right. So, hey, how about you and I just stop stessing by trying to be perfect. You know it’s not possible. The only option that makes sense is this:

Either you must be perfect, or represented by the one who is. Jesus.

So where does that leave us? Not perfect. But labled perfect because he is. Let Jesus wash your car. You’ll get paid anyway.

What’s a faith-free loader? Glad you asked. See if you can find yourself in any of these scenarios, then we’ll talk about what to do about it so you can get the things you’ve been wanting all along.

  • In weight loss, it’s the gal who wants six pack abs by taking a pill while eating ice cream on the couch.
  • In dating, it’s the guy who wants to date a model by reciting some canned pickup lines …even though he’s a poorly dressed slob who compulsively picks his nose.
  • In business, it’s the guy who wants a flood of customers but doesn’t provide actual value in exchange for the money.

In business, it’s the guy who wants a flood of customers but doesn’t provide actual value in exchange for the money.

What’s a Faith Freeloader?

Faith-Free Loaders are people who are the lowest common denominator to their own faith. They desperately pray for something they need, yet put no faith in their ability to do something that will change their situation.

When I was in college, I was working full-time at a restaurant, was a part-time youth pastor, and took a full course load. I averaged only 4 hours of sleep each night – because, sadly, I didn’t have time to sleep. (Or so I thought!)

Result? I was constantly whipped. Tired was an understatement. I survived on 14 Diet Cokes a day to get my caffeine fix.

And you know how silly I was? Ok, let’s just call it like it was – STUPID. I was stupid. Because I’d stay up studying till midnight after working an 8-hour shift, then get up at 4 am.

I would PLEAD with God to give me energy and make me wide-awake. I asked for a miracle every morning that I wouldn’t feel tired. What kind of stupid is that?!

If I needed more rest, I should have cut something out of my life and slept more.

Hey, look, you can pray till you’re blue in the face, but if you don’t put your faith where your mouth is, your faith isn’t worth a pile of poo!

So, am I saying you have to add works to faith?

NO – but sort of.

Some people totally misconstrue the verse: “Faith without works is dead.” (James 2:14). They take it to mean that they have to add their own works to their salvation in order to have solid faith. And that’s misunderstanding the Idea of Faith Without Works

This is not what that scripture means. It’s talking about the fact that faith without Christ’s work is dead. Chew on that for a bit till you get it.

BUT, I’m not saying that you get to be a freeloader when it comes to receiving the things Christ’s work has granted you. If you don’t put your actions to work believing you can behave in a way that brings you what you’re praying for…you probably won’t get it.

You can pray for a miracle to help you get money you need to pay for your groceries, but if you spend your paycheck on beer, it’s not happening!

If you’re praying to lose weight – you need to pray that God will help you make healthy eating choices, start exercising, get enough sleep, and do a better job of taking care of yourself.

And it takes FAITH to believe you can do these things. Especially if you haven’t had success with it in the past.

Some people crack me up – coming to me at the end of a service or ministry time, asking me to pray that they will receive a “MIRACLE” in their area of need. Yet, they will go home and engage in the very same behaviors that got them into their trouble in the first place.

Write this down: The wiser you are, the fewer miracles you’ll need in life.

The smarter your choices, the less you’ll need God to get you out of constant crisis mode.

So what can you do if you have Freeloading faith tendencies?

Use your faith to ask God to change you – that’s where the real miracle is!

There’s a weapon pointed at you!

What’s it look and sound like? Well, have you heard anything like this in your head…

  • You’re in this mess because of your own dumb mistakes!
  • You’re reaping what you sowed, and there’s no way for you to get out of this mess!
  • You’re paying for your past.
  • Your kids are a mess because you’re a lousy parent!
  • You’re going bankrupt because you spend too much money on stuff you don’t need.
  • You’ve destroyed your friendships because you’re not a good friend.
  • You’re going to FAIL!

Or how bout this…

  • God doesn’t love you. Never did. Never will.
  • You don’t deserve God’s favor.
  • You’re not good enough for God to save you.

Do you know what to do when the bullets of the enemy fly? In this quick little video, I’ll show you what you can do to fight back.

[youtube id=”iWaCe4NM3WI”]

Pray this so you can fight with the weapon God gave you:

“Lord, there’s a voice inside my head that’s been telling me I deserve to be in this mess. But Your grace is greater than any mistake I’ve made or sin I’ve committed. I know you’ve forgiven me for my mess and any messes I make in the future so help me to block out the lies that the enemy is trying to tell me. Give me ears to hear your voice of love and acceptance.”

Isaiah 54:17 (NLT)

No weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken!

Do you really know who you are? Most people don’t. And when I say, “who are you?”, I’m not just asking your name or nationality, I’m asking you something bigger.

You don't know who you are, do you

I’m wondering if you know how to stake your identity in Christ. If you can’t, you are in danger!

Because If the enemy can keep you believing you aren’t in Christ – you won’t act like you’re in Christ.

So, let me ask you…do you know who you are in Christ? AND, do you walk in that identity constantly?

I’m going to show you two reasons why it’s hard to keep your identity in Christ and ONE very simple thing you can do immediately to help you remember who you are in Christ. So you can act like you’re in Christ!
